Communication skills are related to the way we listen and understand, the way we use speech and language to send a message and the way we make and maintain friendships with other children. Some children can find communication challenging and SeeSalt speech and language therapists can help. We provide assessment and therapy to children with communication needs. We also offer expert advice to teaching staff to make sure they are supporting your child across all areas of the curriculum.
I work with children where there are concerns with their
Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy spans a wide variety of areas. Areas include; the Early Years, Language Delay and Disorders, Pronunciation difficulties, Complex Needs, Learning Difficulties, e.g. children with Down Syndrome, Deafness, Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
You can continue to be seen by your local NHS therapist and I ensure liaison occurs.
As a parent, you may start to notice that your child is struggling compared to their peers and may need some support. You may have concerns about their speech clarity, their ability to learn new words at the same rate as other children or their social interaction skills. Whatever your concerns, please get in touch. We can advise you on whether your child meets the requirements for an initial consultation.
Does your child?
If you identify any of the above list with your child, or you have any other Speech, Language and Communication concerns. We recommend you start with a Speech and Language Assessment for your child.
Yes if your child has never had an assessment, As therapists we are bound by the professional guidelines set out by the Royal College of speech and Langauge Therapists (RCSLT) and the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) both of which require therapists to have adequate assessment data before beginning a course of therapy.
If your child has had an assessment with a qualified speech and language therapist within the past 6 months, we may be able to continue without a SeeSalt assessment. This is always at the discretion of SeeSalt as we will need an adequate baseline to measure your child's progress.
It is always useful for us to have access to any previous reports for review and these can be uploaded to us and added to.
The assessment session takes place after the initial consultation and the consultation session does not replace an assessment session.
We work with children with a variety of SLCN, including difficulties with:
· Speech sounds and speech clarity
· Speech disorders such as Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia(DVD) Apraxia of Speech.
· Understanding of spoken language
· Expressive language - including sentence structure, vocabulary, use of grammar
· Verbal reasoning skills
· Severe language difficulties such as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
· Social skills, communication, and interaction needs including Autism
· Attention and/or listening skills
· Auditory Processing Difficulties
· Selective Mutism
· Stammering/ Dysfluency
· Language in association with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs (SEMH)
· Phonological Awareness/ Literacy
I will always be unbiased, open and honest with you in relation to my areas of expertise and strengths and will refer you on to other colleagues, with your consent, should I feel that this will achieve the very best outcomes for your child.
Every child is different, but we recommend a minimum of six sessions to really see a meaningful difference. This gives us time to build a relationship with your child and to start to make some positive steps towards transformation. For some children, six sessions is a good starting point, but they may wish to continue and have further support. We also arrange a check-in call after the fifth session, at this point future therapeutic input can be discussed.
Speech and language assessments take approximately an hour. Speech therapy sessions can last up to one hour and vary depending on the difficulty presented and the age of your child.
Younger children typically cope better with shorter appointments.
This includes direct therapy with your child and time taken to discuss progress and addressing any queries you may have.
You won’t lose your place on an NHS waiting list or have sessions reduced if you go private. There are clear professional guidelines to ensure that Speech and Language Therapists in the NHS and private practice work together, although I won’t share any information with anyone unless consent is given. The same goes for schools and nurseries; I can supplement the existing service without you losing out on anything being provided.
Lots of people use private therapists whilst they await the top of an NHS waiting list, or use it to fill the gaps between NHS sessions. There’s no reason why the two can’t run alongside each other and provided I have your consent, I will work collaboratively with your child's or school’s NHS Speech and Language Therapist.
I can carry out an assessment for a second opinion and give you an honest opinion about what your child needs.
We require 24 hour notice for cancellation. Anything more than 24 hours can be cancelled or rearranged without charge. If sessions are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice they may be fully chargeable.
